Periodontal Health

If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, you are not alone. 75% of the

population has some form of the disease but most do not realize it. There are several

stages of gum disease. Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the gums that is reversible.

However, periodontal disease is gum and bone disease, which means the infection

has spread into the bone and permanent damage has occurred. The damage is bone

loss around the teeth. Left untreated the damage eventually may lead to tooth loss.

Additionally, in recent years it has been found that gum disease is linked to other illness

such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Some factors that may contribute to

periodontal disease are family history, medications, age, gender, family transmission,

smoking, clenching/grinding, stress, osteoporosis, diabetes and hormones. It is

important to remember that there is no cure for periodontal disease, it can only be

controlled and maintained. Dr. Strauss's office uses non-surgical methods for treating

periodontal disease. Please see Non- Surgical Periodontal Treatment section.
