If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, you are not alone. 75% of the population has some form of the disease but most do not realize it. There are several stages of gum disease. Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the gums that is reversible. However, periodontal disease is gum and bone disease, which means the infection has spread into the bone and permanent damage has occurred. The damage is bone loss around the teeth. Left untreated the damage eventually may lead to tooth loss. Additionally, in recent years it has been found that gum disease is linked to other illness such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Some factors that may contribute to periodontal disease are family history, medications, age, gender, family transmission, smoking, clenching/grinding, stress, osteoporosis, diabetes and hormones.
